KARACHI: According to Geo News, Sindh Inspector General Ghulam Nabi Memon, at least two terrorists were killed in the ongoing firing inside and outside the Karachi Police Chief's office when militants stormed the building in Shaara Faisal.

According to initial reports received by Geo News, an unknown number of terrorists opened fire on the headquarters located next to the Sadar police station.

The attack started at 7:10 PM. M was on his way when there were multiple explosions and the terrorists attacked the five-storey police building.

The complex houses several police buildings as well as residences for officers and their families.

The operation to eliminate the terrorists continued, in which four people including two militants, a civilian and a police officer were killed. Meanwhile, nine people, including three Rangers personnel and a police officer, were injured and taken to Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center (JPMC).

Sources, who said that there were at least 8-10 terrorists inside the police force and many more outside, said that though more than half an hour had passed, the exchange of fire continued.

Meanwhile, a state of emergency has been declared in JPMC.

Rangers have been called and the main thoroughfare has been closed to traffic in light of the situation.

Traffic diversion plan

In view of the terrorist attack, the authorities blocked both sides of Shaara Faisal from Awari Hotel to the nursery.

Traffic will be diverted from Avari Hotel to Tin Talwar and Cantonment Railway Station to avoid disturbing commuters. While the traffic coming from the nursery has been diverted towards Korangi Road.

Traffic coming from Korangi Road will be diverted to Hino Chowrangi through Defense turn (Sunset Boulevard and Korangi Road junction).

'General security threat'

In a private conversation with Geo News, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that police commandos and Rangers came to the area to deal with the terrorists.

He said the federal government was in touch with the Sindh police and "all assistance will be provided".

Sanaullah said he spoke to the general secretary and IG Sindh, who confirmed that police saw "six or seven terrorists" entering the building.

In response to a question, he said that there is a general threat to security after the terrorist attack in Peshawar. All institutions across the country are on high alert," he said.

Sanaullah stressed that more steps should be taken against the new wave of terrorism.
According to the police, the terrorists threw a grenade after parking the car and used it as cover to enter the building.

'Unacceptable'

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and leaders of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), which is in power in the province, have condemned the attack.

The minister expressed his apprehension of an increase in such attacks, hoping that heinous acts would not destabilize the country.

Sindh Prime Minister Murad Ali Shah was informed of the attack on the Additional Inspector General's office and ordered several DIGs to send their police force to the scene.

The Prime Minister said that he tête-à-tête covered the situation and ordered the concerned authorities to arrest the indicted involved in the incident.

Sindh governor directs officials to take 'strong action'

Sindh Governor Kamran Tesori expressed concern over the attack and sought a report from Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon. He directed the authorities to take "stern measures" against the terrorists.

"Terrorists must be fought firmly. Attacks are a very important concern," he said.

Meanwhile, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon insisted on defeating the terrorists.

Terrorists will be taught a lesson not to obey government orders. "They did a sneak attack and this attack will cost them dearly," the minister said.

Cities on high alert

Islamabad-based IG Akbar Nasir Khan has confirmed in a statement that security is on high alert in the federal capital and all officers have been ordered to stay in their respective areas.

He added that authorities have been directed to keep all big buildings and red zones on high alert.

"Official vehicles should also be checked," Islamabad directed the IG, while "carrying necessary identification documents during civil travel."

SSP Hyderabad Police also said that security is on high alert in the city and lockdown and checking are being done fast.

On the other hand, the Mirpurkha police say that the doors of all police stations and police lines in the city have been locked and security personnel have been deployed.
